Guest webinar: Exploring freeform optics with SSI

Wed, Jan 17, 2018 7:30 - 8:30 AM PDT
Learn about freeform optical design and manufacturing with Spectrum Scientific, Inc. (SSI), and get answers to these questions:

  • Should I be afraid of freeform optics? (Spoiler alert: The answer is no!)
  • What are freeform optics?
  • What is the mainstream availability?
  • What are the benefits of using freeform optics?
  • How can I design freeform surfaces in OpticStudio?
  • How do I transition from freeform design to manufacturing with SSI?
  • Which metrology methods are best?

In this webinar, we’ll also announce an upcoming design competition hosted by Zemax and SSI.
About the instructors:
David Cook is the general manager at Spectrum Scientific, Inc. Prior to founding SSI in 2004, he was an engineering manager responsible for diffractive and aspheric optics manufacturing at the West Coast Optics Division of PerkinElmer. Mr. Cook also worked at Physical Optics Corporation and Northrop’s Electronic Systems Division. He earned a bachelor’s degree in optical engineering from the University of La Verne.

Erin Elliott is a principal optical engineer and researcher at Zemax. Prior to joining Zemax, she spent a decade working on the James Webb Space Telescope. Dr. Elliott also worked on instruments and testbeds for various NASA missions, including the Hubble Space Telescope, the Large Binocular Telescope, the Giant Magellan Telescope, and the Terrestrial Planet Finder. She earned a PhD in optics from the University of Arizona.

Guest webinar: 12 tips from Optimax to improve lens design for manufacturing

Wed, Jan 24, 2018 7:30 - 8:30 AM PDT

Learn 12 ways to speed up the turnaround time and lower the cost of your lenses, including strategies for:

  • Improving communication between lens designers and manufacturing shops
  • Standardizing design processes
  • Minimizing confusion about non-standard parts
  • Reducing lens design errors

About the instructors:
Jennifer Michels is an optical engineer at Optimax, a world class manufacturer of precision optics. Prior to her career in fabrication and testing, Ms. Michels worked in optical design and analysis for 20 years.

Dr. Thomas Pickering is an associate product manager on the OpticStudio team at Zemax. He received a PhD in Accelerator Physics from Royal Holloway, University of London. As a researcher with CERN, DESY, and Cornell University, Dr. Pickering focused on the development of particle beam profile monitors using laser wire systems, optical diffraction radiation, and optical transition radiation.
